Tonight, 5:30 PM, the Faith-Based Initiative Group is presenting the attached resolution to the City Council to hold a community wide dialogue to consider proclaiming Tucson as an ”Immigrant Welcoming City”. You are encouraged to attend and support this resolution.
Enter through new SE entrance to TCC, downtown on Church St.and look for signs to the City Council Meeting, starting at 5:30 PM today.

Issue – At the request of Council Member Romero, this item has been scheduled to provide an opportunity to consider the attached Resolution.  The proposed Resolution declares support for the Tucson Police Chief in protecting the public safety and constitutional rights of all people living and traveling within the City of Tucson regardless of their immigration status; and commits to facilitating a community-wide dialogue within and among all the interested sectors of the city to consider proclaiming Tucson an “Immigrant Welcoming City.”

 

City Manager’s Office Recommendation – The City Manager’s Office asks that the Mayor and Council consider the attached Resolution.

 

Background – This item was scheduled at the request of Council Member Romero following the United States Supreme Court decision in the case Arizona et al. v. United States, wherein the Court determined that three out of the four sections of Senate Bill (SB) 1070 that were challenged on federal preemption grounds did in fact violate the Constitution of the United States. 

 

Present Consideration – The attached Resolution is presented for consideration.

 

Financial Considerations – None.

 

Operating Cost and Maintenance Input – None.

 

Legal Considerations – The City Attorney assisted in the preparation of the attached Resolution.
